Cottage of Curiosities

Lacock in mid Wiltshire, one of the most picturesque villages in the country, is an exquisite mixture of stone, half-timbered and thatched buildings, the earliest dating from the 13th century. The village was once a centre of the medieval wool trade, and today it reflects the importance of those times with no overhead cables or yellow markings on its street to blight the scenery. It has also formed the set for numerous block-buster films and period dramas, including the Harry Potter films and recently the television series Cranford starring Dame Judi Dench.

Lacock Abbey, founded in 1232 by the countess of Salisbury, nestles at one end of this village and has been cared for by the National Trust since 1944. A country house was created from the medieval abbey and became the home of the founders of photography: William Henry Fox Talbot. With so much to offer the visitor, it’s only apt that the Trust recently renovated one of Lacock’s buildings into a superb holiday cottage. Located on the High Street and adjacent to the delightful Red Lion pub, No. 2 is an attractive building of curious history, noticeably evident from the exterior with windows...
